Excess speed in Hornsea |
||
|
Good afternoon,
Your Town Councillors have passed on your concerns regarding the speed of vehicles on certain roads in Hornsea. namely Atwick Road, Hull Road and Cliff Road.
Today I have spent a couple of hours with Cllr Nick Cox, (who also runs the “Hornsea - Not in my Town” initiative), on Atwick Road where around a dozen drivers were given words of advice about excess speed, and a further two were reported for consideration of prosecution.
I have also spent time on Cliff Road and Hull Road. I suspected that speeds on Cliff Road may not be as they seem: obstacles, narrow roads and roads with buildings on either side often lead to false perceptions of speed. I made sure I was not too visible at varying points along the road, and monitored traffic for around 45 minutes, and found the average speed to be around 24mph. However, even with my many years (23) experience of dealing with road traffic offences and operating a "speed gun," I can fully understand why residents feel unsafe, as even 24mph looks fast.
Hull Road also produced results, albeit no pending prosecutions. It is very easy to have a lapse in concentration coming down that hill, and equally to pass the last houses on the right before being psychologically conned into believing the speed limit must be higher, but those are not excuses in law, just possible reasons.
When time allows I will continue to attend Hornsea as well as my other areas of road safety improvement, and will work with Nick, the Town Council and East Riding HIghways team. Please continue to share your concerns with your Council, and via the “Hornsea - Not in my Town” initiative, and the Holderness Community Policing Teams will do our best to make your community and your roads safe places to be.
Kind regards
Jonathan
